  • Quizzes

    The art of Self Discipline

Quizzes must be completed by all students

What do you think is the best thing about technology?

Compare it with what you think is the worst thing about technology.

  • Games

    The art of Self Discipline

Games can be good and bad.

Some types of games are good for you.
Mindless shooting games are not good for you and train people to do things without thinking.
Sometimes these things are bad. Doing things without thinking is called impulsive behaviour.
    https://www.gamedesigning.org/why-video-games-are-good/
    https://parenting.firstcry.com/articles/video-games-impact-on-children-the-good-and-the-bad/

    Good Games

Good games need the player to plan and think about tasks that help to get a higher score

    Bad Games foster impulsiveness

Bad games do not need extra thinking other than to pick up resources and shoot or react. These games should be played less and if necessary used as a reward for set periods of time, possibly 1 hour.

    Good Games

Good games can help with academic achievement.

    Bad games

Bad games do not enhance academic achievement. Many of these are used to train soldiers to kill.

  • Phone Usage

    The art of Self Discipline

When the people you are with are less important

For most cultures it is rude to answer the phone in the company of others.
When your friends are not important.
Many adults will leave early and visit rarely if they are not considered important enough.

    Phone Usage

P1 'Let's go to Janes place'.
P2 'Naa she's boring! She is always on the phone'.

BEST SOLUTION: Switch phone off or to silent when with friends.

    84% of professionals

84% of professionals say texting in a meeting is very bad manners and very rude.

    Text in meetings
In most businesses this will get you fired. (lose your job)
BEST OPTION: Switch you phone off.  Put it on silent if you are an emergency worker.
If you are an emergency worker, ask your boss if you can leave the room and explain why you should reply to a text or call. Do not stay in the room to reply.

    One way conversations

Are very distracting to any one in hearing distance. It is recommended  to leave the room and be at least 3m from any doorway

    One sided conversations

    Phones on the table

Phones should be kept out of site but when some groups are out to dinner all phones are placed on the table. The first phone to ring has to pay for the meal.

    Phones on the table
BEST SOLUTION: When out with friends switch your phone off.
    Phones on the table

The main issue is 'One sided conversations' are distracting and annoying to listen to. I have turned around to answer someone a thousand times to find they were not talking to me but to their phone.

  • Lies and Bullies

    The art of Self Discipline

    Truth lies mediocrity excellence.

Anybody can have access to social media.

Much information we see in social media can be lies or another persons view of what they think is the truth.

Trump on Twitter is a good example. The truth was not important but making himself look good by instigating blame to others was important.
    Lies and blame

For some the information in their head, is important to them, so they make it seem more important in social media. In fact their information is of little value when looking at all the research available.

Some people share excellent information on social media. The information is not given to hurt people. The information is based on good research and the context in which it is used is very clear. This type of information often helps us to look at things from a different perspective.
    Quality sharing

    Lies and money.

If it is too good to be true: it is.

If any one is offering a great deal it is never as good as you think it will be.

Marketing is the art of making the ordinary seem fantastic.

There is no such thing as free money. You have not won a prize; it means that someone is trying to trick you out of money or

    trick you into buying something.

BEST OPTION: Ignore offers that are going to be very good for you.

Never Never give a person your credit card numbers.

If buying on line use a broker like PayPal or know the person you are buying from. Not as a social media friend but as a real person who you have met.

    Direct bank payment is best.

Another choice is to use a special credit card that does not have much money in it so you minimise your losses.

    Sharing

When something is shared it carries more strength, more people believe it is true.

Most people share without fully knowing what they are sharing.

BEST OPTION: Be careful about what you share.

Just because it sounds good does not make it true.

    False news spreads 10x faster.

People create stories for many different reasons.

Sometimes to make themselves seem more important.

Some because they have political reasons.

Some because they believe in conspiracy theories.

    And some for religious kudos.

BEST OPTION; Do not share lies. Sharing spreads very quickly making the false news seem important.

If something concerns you do a thorough search with google or duckduckgo and check sites that are university based or proper news services.

Even then it could still be false news.

    Cyber Bullying

Bullying is very bad in any form or method.

Everyone is different. Because there are lots of differences in people it makes the world interesting. If we were all the same it would be very boring and so much could never be achieved.

There are many different ways to think, act, learn and move.

Cyber bullying takes the form of messages designed to hurt, blame, insult or put a person in their place. All of which are unacceptable and bordering on evil.

Cyber bullying also take the form of exclusion. eg I don't want you as my friend.

    Cyber Bullying Examples

    Cyber Bullying
Forwarding on or sharing private messages.

Writing or saying things that have double meanings.

Writing or saying things to blame others for anything.

Blame is a useless emotion designed to make the person using blame feel better. Most of the time it is hurtful to the receiver.

Another common cyber bullying tactic that lower intelligence people use is hate-mail or text.

  • Balancing Time

    The art of Self Discipline

    Time and Balance

Where did that time go? I was only playing for 20 minutes.
I will stop at the next level mum only 10 minutes. ------------> 2 hours later still playing.
If you have trouble stopping and balancing your time you ARE ADDICTED.
If you get angry rather than annoyed, when asked to do other work then you ARE ADDICTED.
Education is about learning many different things. We must know enough about everything to be able to make wise and educated decisions about our future.
Some games can help you become a better doctor but there are many different things you must learn that can not be learnt from a game.
Social interaction can be learnt in team games but there is so much more to interacting with people than that which we see in games.

BEST OPTION: balance your time to gain a knowledge and experience of all aspects of life so you can be a person that humanity respects.

    Philosophy

Computing is used to create an holistic approach to learning by working with Social studies, Public speaking and Science.

To support subjects, specific software is taught so students can complete high quality presentations.

The emphasis is on using the computer as a tool for creating, researching and expressing learning from many different areas. The ultimate goal is for the students to be able to take control of their learning, understand what is good research and express this in acceptable high quality formats.

'Student centered classrooms' that are also a  'flipped classroom' are the preferred methods of delivery. The website for the flipped classroom is brettwilkin.com. The flipped classroom frees the teacher to work with the students more often

Students use the website to review what is taught in class and revise for exams. The site logs show students often want to work late at night to finish quizzes and submit work.

Being an ESL classroom all new words on the web site are linked to a Thai dictionary. The site dictionary gives the meanings of the words in the context of how they are being used on the site.

Small quizzes to support learning and cater to the curriculum requirements are done on line via the students personal accounts.
This means most of the feedback is instant.

A 'Constructivist' approach is based on project activities and their outcomes. To this end the website is updated regularly to accommodate changing social attitudes, student brain dominances and learning styles.

There is a strong emphasis on creative thinking, research skill and looking for answers rather than being spoon fed.

As this is an ESL classroom students can review any information they do not understand.
It is noted according to the website logs students often log on to do quizzes late at night when they are of the feeling to work.

    Teaching Report:

    Review 2020
As a now unit this appeared to go well with some students having a full understanding of the topics. I think the most important aspect of this unit is that students know what the teachers expectations are with social media and usage of technologies.
    Review 2021
Unit worked online with covid issues but a little boring.
    Review 2022
Shifted all quizzes to a common Question Bank so they are accessible to all courses. Unit could use some more activities for M1 students but time constraints make it difficult.
